REVIEW: Bride of the Water God (manhwa, vol.REVIEW: So Pretty It Hurts (book) by Kate White.REVIEW: Alice in the Country of Hearts: Junk Box S.REVIEW: Woof Woof Story: I Told You to Turn Me Int.As expected, some of the humor is the kind of stuff that'll go over the heads of readers who don't speak Japanese - I knew the character names seemed a bit odd (and recognized the "rabbit" and "bear" parts of Usahara and Kumatani's names), but hadn't realized that all or most of them were intended to be jokes or puns. There are also character profiles (you won't learn their likes and dislikes, but you will learn how much they smoke and drink), the full lyrics of the songs they sing on the show ("The Cat's Staring at Nothing Again" made me tear up a little), a few bonus comics, a one-page afterword comic, and 6 pages of translator's notes. This is actually an omnibus edition containing the first two volumes of the series, so there's color artwork at the beginning of both volumes (3 pages total). This is definitely a series that will stick with me, whether it entirely works for me or not. The page where Uramichi basically explained spoon theory to the kids made me wince in sympathy. On the plus side, the artwork is excellent, and there are definitely some good "adulthood sucks" pages and panels throughout. And I'll be continuing on, by the way - I ordered both volumes together. I'm not even sure yet if it works for me - although I liked the second half better, I have no clue what my reaction to Volume 2 will be. This series is dark and won't work for everyone. He hated Usahara but still put up with Usahara showing up at his apartment and annoying him, because what else could he do? A little interaction with adults you dislike is better than no interaction with anyone except at work, I guess. Uramichi was functionally depressed and had literally no one but his coworkers. The character dynamics were occasionally a bit weird and almost certainly unhealthy, which I think was the point. For example, the beach shoot was both horrible and absolutely hilarious. I preferred the parts of the volume that were more focused on the characters as dysfunctional coworkers to the parts starring the adult cast plus their strange child-shaped audience members. I wasn't a fan of the first half of the volume, but the humor started to grow on me in the second half. I doubt real little kids would have responded to Uramichi overdoing his usual introductory routine by asking each other "Is it just me, or is he really on today?" I tended to prefer the moments when the kids did feel a bit more real and were clearly concerned and worried about Uramichi, who constantly seemed moments away from snapping. They were also possibly intended to be concerned reader stand-ins. In the world of this manga, however, apparently just about anything was fine as long as Uramichi and his coworkers could manage to keep smiles on their faces, follow at least the overall skeleton of the script, and wear whatever they were asked to wear.įor the most part, the kids on the show weren't kids, but rather kid-shaped constructs designed to rub the cast's faces in the fact that their lives weren't going the way they'd hoped. I expected Uramichi to have a little more of a filter than he did - in the real world, someone would have frantically turned off the cameras and pulled him off-stage before he'd gotten more than a few sentences out. To be honest, this portion of the volume was a little too direct for me. Right from the start, Uramichi was on camera with the kids, smiling as he explained that his voice was raspy because he'd drunk too much the night before. Uramichi's coworkers include: Daga Iketeru, a handsome 27-year-old singer/actor who can't tell time on an analog clock and has a weakness for juvenile jokes Tadano Utano, a 32-year-old failed idol singer who's in a dead-end relationship with a failed comedian Usahara Tobikichi, a 28-year-old who has an unfortunate habit of pissing Uramichi off and Kumatani Mitsuo, a 28-year-old who seems to somewhat unwillingly be Usahara's friend by virtue of them having been college roommates. Although he's able to keep a smile plastered on his face while the cameras are rolling, he can't stop himself from making depressing comments about adulthood when the kids on the show remind him that they still have their dreams and whole lives ahead of them, while he just has meaningless workouts, an empty apartment, and a job that's slowly killing him inside. Omota Uramichi is a 31-year-old kids' show host who used to be a professional gymnast. Life Lessons with Uramichi Oniisan is a dark workplace comedy series. The app also integrates with other Zoho business tools, such as Zoho Books and Zoho Invoice, making it a convenient choice for businesses that already use these tools. This can be especially useful for business owners and freelancers who need to keep track of their expenses for tax or reimbursement purposes. In addition to scanning and organizing receipts, Zoho Expense also allows users to create expense reports and submit them for approval. This makes it easy to see where your money is going and create reports for tax purposes or reimbursement claims. The app can automatically extract information from scanned receipts and categorize them according to user-defined rules. One of the main benefits of using Zoho Expense as a receipt scanner app is that it allows users to easily track and manage their expenses. This also led to those players winning the game, but by that point it was getting late and I needed to get Chloe home to bed, so I was more relieved that the game was over. Luckily, a couple of the other players we were with managed to hit him in a row a couple of times during the game. In the game Chloe and I played, bad luck on the cards that were available really hurt us early in the game which made it hard to build up a good deck that would give us the cards we needed to hurt the Mastermind. To defeat the Mastermind, you have to kill him like 5 times, and he has a pretty high life value that you have to beat. Yet, the addition of the Mastermind also contributes to the only problem I have with the game, which is it's length. The deck of cards is one of the better ones in terms of variety and effects. Everything else in Delirium is standard Ascension. While it is a little wonky that auctions can trigger at the start of the game when players have unequal numbers of Insight, it’s nothing that will make or break the game. The people we played with commented that there have been several times they've lost against the board, and they will purposely break out the game to try and defeat that mastermind again. Surprisingly, this even works in a 2-player game. This aspect, combined with villains who are constantly trying to escape, really do a good job of bringing in the superhero feel of Marvel Comics. It strays away from other deck building games like Dominion and Ascension by adding in the cooperative gameplay of the players having to work together to defeat enemies to help topple the mastermind. Command the resourceful Scavenger clan as they survive the mayhem of post-apocalyptic tactical battles. It’s currently only available on Apple Arcade, but that could change in the future. The shorter levels seems to mean there's a lot MORE levels, so the game does move faster than Kingdom Rush which makes it less frustrating when you lose, no need to replay a 15min long level because you lost on the last wave.Īnd having 4 active "Tactics" abilities/units does force you to stay on your toes. Junkworld TD is the latest tower defense game from Ironhide. I know I'm sounding really negative about the game, but I am actually enjoying it. With only 3 waves in Junkworld and only preparing them between waves, you just have to place them down and hope you're prepared (uh oh, they threw flying enemies at me and I didn't place any anti-air towers.). The Kingdom Rush games have never been great at telegraphing what enemy units it will throw at you, but since most levels were like 5, 7, 10+ waves long, it slowly built up the waves so you can prepare the towers and strategize while you play. I think this makes the waves much more boring since you only focus on placing units or bombs on a cooldown instead of placing more towers and upgrading them mid-wave. You also can't place towers during waves, only the "Tactic" units (stuff like dropping explosive barrels, or placing friendly units down, like in Kingdom Rush games). The upgrade currency is pretty limited, but lets you upgrade the tower (instead of the regular currency like it used to). And instead of gaining currency to buy towers by defeating enemies during waves, you just get a lump sum at the end of the wave along with a few "upgrade" currency. Unfortunately the game doesn't show you a cooldown so you just have to wait for the flashing arrows to appear to let you know you can tap it to trigger the special.Ī big change from Kingdom Rush is that every level seems to only be 3 waves (at least so far, I'm about a dozen levels in I think). This can be an AOE effect, faster damage, etc. And the placement freedom has a usability issue where you can place towers REALLY close together, so it can be hard to tap them when their special move is ready.Įach tower has a "Special" it can perform when you tap it. You still end up sticking towers in the same spots (corners, around curves, places where you can make choke points, etc.). On one hand this might make you feel like you have more freedom with tower placement, but not really. Instead of specific spots to put towers, the game lets you put them down manually yourself. I'm a huge Kingdom Rush fan, it's probably my favorite franchise on mobile, and Junkworld is definitely an offshoot of it, but different in a lot of way and sadly mostly for the worse. and not sure how I'm feeling about it yet. I just started playing Junkworld (renewed my Apple Arcade just for it). Some of the advertisers that generate the vast majority of its revenue have either halted spending or reduced it sharply, the company has a debt burden of $13bn and Musk has dropped the brand that made Twitter a force in social media. Musk is adamant, however, that the platform he bought for a vast sum of money faces its own digital death if it does not change. To set up a payments app seems fanciful at this point.” “Setting up an entire payment structure is so labour-intensive and he has cut to the absolute bone. Melissa Ingle, a former senior data scientist at Twitter, says Musk’s ambitions could be difficult to carry out after the Tesla CEO axed 80% of the platform’s workforce. Twitter has a very small user base,” he says, adding that Musk has shown himself to be a “very unreliable partner” since he bought Twitter. “Why would you hand over your destiny to a third-party platform? In China you have to because everyone is on WeChat. Tencent was able to build WeChat in China more than a decade ago when the market there was still in flux, whereas in the west there are well-established players in individual sectors of the digital economy, such as Google in search, Facebook in social media and Amazon in e-commerce.Įvans doubts whether a western app would want to hand over control of its customer experience to a Musk-operated everything app. “There are lots and lots of people who ask for money through Twitter … a version of Twitter could make a commercial play with that,” she says, before adding: “You can have a really good product and a really good system, but if people don’t trust it, it’s not going to happen.”Īnalysts also point to structural barriers for an everything app in the western world. Large numbers of people already link to payment options on their account profiles, she says. The question is whether you would trust Musk with any payments process, Daisley says. He adds, however, that making payments a key part of a rebranded Twitter platform – a clear ambition of Musk’s – could work in the US, where the online banking and payments set-up is less well developed than in the UK and Europe. “It’s impossible not to be intoxicated by WeChat and the hold it has got on Chinese life, from messaging people to ordering cabs and paying for things,” he says.ĭaisley says it is a “slightly flawed premise” to presume that because everything apps have emerged and succeeded in China the same will happen elsewhere. Bruce Daisley, the former head of Twitter’s European operations, says he went on holiday to China in 2018 and was captivated by WeChat. It was reported last year that Microsoft has considered building a “super app”. Linda Yaccarino, Twitter’s chief executive, has said payments and banking will be a focus for the rebranded business.įascination with the everything app idea is not new and has been on western tech execs’ minds for years. Users can also easily send money to each other via WeChat messages. Users simply have to scan a merchant’s QR code to pay for a good using “cash” in their WeChat wallet, which is connected to a bank account. WeChat’s payment function allows users to pay for goods from within the WeChat app. “Imagine if you used OpenTable, Uber and Deliveroo entirely inside the Facebook app, using your Facebook identity and a Facebook payment account instead of a credit card – and then you paid for coffee and paid for the tube with it as well,” says Benedict Evans, a tech analyst. If an error occurred while updating or installing macOS I would restore the heart to Janos, and thus undo the vile crime committed by my abominable former self." ―Raziel If the heart was truly imbued with the power to restore vampiric unlife, its highest purpose was clear to me. "And finally, when all these debts had been paid, I would reclaim Janos Audron’s heart from their filthy, unworthy hands. Raziel pursued the Sarafan to their stronghold and recovered the Reaver, but was unable to find the Heart of Darkness, which remained hidden. As the Sarafan retreated taking with them the Heart of Darkness and the Reaver, Raziel vowed to recover the heart - realizing that if the heart was imbued as reputed, he could use it to revive Janos. Raziel eventually met Janos at his aerie but his ascent through the retreat had opened the way for the Sarafan commanders (the human Raziel, Turel, Dumah, Zephon, and Melchiah) to reach Janos and he was powerless to prevent Janos's murder and shocked to discover that his former human self was personally responsible for the act and the extraction of the heart. With Raziel seeking the truths of his own destiny and told by Vorador that Janos had the answers he sought, Raziel traveled into Nosgoth's early history, desperately seeking to reach the Ancient vampire before the Sarafan arrived. The legend of the heart would be revisited in Soul Reaver 2, initially recounted by Raziel when he encountered a stained glass window depicting Janos's murder and the extraction of the Heart of Darkness in the Sarafan Stronghold. Kain often used similar relics to restore his Blood level and revive him if his health was completely depleted (similar to traditional 'extra-lives'). Kain first described the legend shortly after emerging from his grave and finding his first Heart of Darkness objects, recalling how the heart had been torn from Janos's body at the hands of the Sarafan and was believed to have the ability to restore vampiric unlife. The Heart of Darkness and the legend of Janos Audron were first mentioned in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. The Sarafan therefore guarded it carefully, lest the Heart fall into the hands of their enemies." ―Raziel This relic came to be known as the ‘Heart of Darkness’, and was supposedly imbued with the power to restore vampiric ‘unlife’. Stained Glass depicting the extraction of the Heart of Darkness and Janos's death "His reign of terror ended when the Sarafan finally hunted him down and tore his throbbing heart from his still-living body. Armed with this knowledge, Raziel would confront Kain, apparently killing him to recover the heart and use it to revive Janos. This objective would continue for Raziel in Legacy of Kain: Defiance - prompting the revelation that Mortanius had used the heart to turn Kain into a vampire. The Heart would become a vital object in the final stages of Soul Reaver 2 as Raziel sought to recover the heart and use it to restore the murdered Janos. It was reputed to have been ripped from the chest of Ancient vampire Janos Audron by the Sarafan in Nosgoth's early history inspiring many tales and relics into the Blood Omen era. The Heart of Darkness was a legendary artifact believed to possess the power to restore Vampiric unlife. Life is precious, Janos discovered – as it was torn throbbing and bleeding from his own body." ―Kain - Listen ( file info) Defiance "Reputed to have been ripped from the chest of the greatest vampire to have ever existed, Janos Audron, the Heart of Darkness restores vampiric unlife. It seems unlikely that the new study, published in the journal Meccanica, will settle any of the long-standing disputes about how and when the cloth was made, which depend largely on faith. Ramsey added that using radiocarbon dating to study objects from seismically active regions, such as regions like Japan, generally has not been problematic. "There are huge numbers of radiocarbon dates from the region for much older archaeological material, which certainly don't show this type of intense in-situ radiocarbon production (and they would be much more sensitive to any such effects)." "One question that would need to be addressed is why the material here is affected, but other archaeological and geological material in the ground is not," Ramsey wrote in an email. "People have been measuring materials of that age for decades now and nobody has ever encountered this."Ĭhristopher Ramsey, director of the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, had a similar issue with the findings. "It would have to be a really local effect not to be measurable elsewhere," Cook told Live Science. (His own theories include a corona discharge.) However, he wrote that he is "confident" the 1980s radiocarbon dating "furnished wrong results probably due to a neutron emission."Įven if it is theoretically possible for earthquake-generated neutrons to have caused this kind of reaction, the study doesn't address why this effect hasn't been seen elsewhere in the archaeological record, Gordon Cook, a professor of environmental geochemistry at the University of Glasgow, explained. In an email, Fanti said he is not sure if a neutron emission is the only possible source responsible for creating the body image. Giulio Fanti, a professor of mechanical engineering at Padua University, published a book last year "Il Mistero della Sindone," translated as "The Mystery of the Shroud," (Rizzoli, 2013), arguing that his own analysis proves the shroud dates to Jesus' lifetime. The reactions also could have led to "a wrong radiocarbon dating," which would explain the results of the 1989 experiments, Carpinteri said in a statement. These neutron emissions could have interacted directly with nitrogen atoms in the linen fibers, inducing chemical reactions that created the distinctive face image on the shroud, the scientists say. (They simulated this by crushing very brittle rock specimens under a press machine.) The group of scientists, led by Alberto Carpinteri of the Politecnico di Torino in Italy, suspect high-frequency pressure waves generated in the Earth's crust during this earthquake could have produced significant neutron emissions. Carbon-14 is typically created when neutrons from cosmic rays collide with nitrogen atoms in the atmosphere (though it can be unleashed by manmade nuclear reactions, too). That's why scientists can look at the carbon-14 concentration in organic archaeological materials like fabrics, bones and wood to estimate age. Īll living things have the same ratio of stable carbon to radioactive carbon-14, but after death, the radioactive carbon decays in a predictable pattern over time. The new theory hinges on neutrons released by a devastating earthquake that hit Old Jerusalem around the same time that Jesus is believed to have died. |
